5 Tips for Getting into Video Game Development

Are you a long-standing gamer or have you only discovered it recently? The industry has attracted millions of new players in modern times as the pandemic has kept more people at home with extra time on their hands. The UK video games market hit a record £7bn in sales in 2020, which represented an unprecedented 30% year-on-year increase

Boredom isn’t the only factor behind the gaming boom, however. The release of new technology such as next-gen consoles and virtual reality headsets also sparked increased interest, while the rise of streaming and esports has turned gaming into a legitimate profession.

A knock-on effect of any industry boom is an uptick in people wanting to find their way in. Video game development will be a dream job to many – and could be perfect if you have a passion for programming and creative thinking.

Here are five tried-and-tested tips for getting started as a video game developer.

Pick a programming language (or two)

There are several popular programming languages out there. C++ is tricky to get started with but rewards you with the ability to control graphic processes and hardware performance, while Java is a go-to option for mobile game creators.

Other options include Python, which, alongside C++, is supported by the latest Raspberry Pi microcomputer – a handy device for budding game developers.

Start building your own games

The logical next step is to have a go at writing your own video games. You’ll gain valuable experience in the process, as well as having something tangible to show off to potential employers.

Many game dev tools are free to download too so your start-up costs will be minimal.

Create a portfolio and share your work

CVs and cover letters still count for something – but in a creative industry, you’ll stand a better chance if armed with a portfolio of work. Your samples could include images and videos as well as rule sets and other supporting information that backs up your expertise.

Gaming forums are great for sharing work in too as many professional developers scout them for talent.

Find your way into a gaming company

There are various ways to get your foot in the door with a game development studio. Two common entry-level routes are interning and games testing, the latter of which is especially known to lead to full-time development positions for those who show initiative.

Alternatively, offering your existing skills in art or sound design could secure you an internship and an opportunity to make a noticeable impact.

Get a relevant degree

While by no means a necessity, having a relevant degree will always help. Courses exist in game art and design, while subjects such as computer science will instil you with plenty of transferrable skills. That being said, it’s important to maintain outside interests as the industry can be so fast moving.

Is video game development the career for you? Try these tips and turn your passion into a paying profession.
