5 ways to fix a broken appliance

Appliance problems can occur at any time of the day or night. The presence of the problem is usually announced by an unresponsive appliance or an underwhelming performance. The repair cost usually comes to mind, and it may be pocket unfriendly. Dealing with such problems, especially when you didn’t budget it, can be an issue. You’re better off taking some DIY steps before calling an expert to fix it.

Quality Appliance Repair Calgary LTD walks you through 5 ways to fix your broken appliances before calling on a repair professional.

Check the Switch

One of the commonest and most obvious problems affecting your appliance is the switch. Your appliance may not be correctly plugged into the electric socket, or the switch may be off.

Check the switch on the wall socket as well as the switch on the appliance itself. Confirm that both switches are flipped on, then check the wires. Sometimes your appliance may fail to come on due to twisted cables.

It is important to note that appliances with faulty or broken wires can be dangerous to use. You may need to contact a professional to replace the cables and prevent associated risks.

If, after flipping the switch, your appliance doesn’t come on, proceed to the breaker box. Most appliances, including grinders, blenders, dishwashers, microwaves, and stoves, often come with a breaker box. Check your main electrical breaker box if it doesn’t have a breaker box.

Switch it off and on, then proceed to restart the appliance. The chances are high that the socket in your kitchen may have tripped off, thus affecting power distribution to your appliance. If this doesn’t work, proceed to the second option.

Inspect the electrical cord

The electrical cord on your appliance is responsible for transferring electrical energy from the socket, through the plug, and into your appliance. A problem with the cord can affect power delivery to your appliance, thus causing it not to respond.

Check if the electrical cord is twisted or has broken. If so, switch off the socket and unplug your appliance to prevent electrical shocks, fires, and other related hazards. You may need to change the cord to address the problem.

Check the Filter

Most kitchen appliances come with a filter. The filter does a perfect job of sieving solid materials and particles from the appliance’s engine.

Sometimes a clogged filter may mount undue pressure on your appliance, causing it to trip off or malfunction. Ensure that the filters are checked regularly and that they are cleaned as appropriate.

Some of the common kitchen appliances with filters include your ice maker, washing machine, refrigerator, dishwasher, etc.

To clean your dishwasher, follow the steps below;

Locate and remove the filter for cleaning. The chances that food particles have clogged your dishwasher’s filter are high. Remove it, give it a gentle tap, and dislodge the solid waste. Clean the inside of the dishwasher and ensure that the filter is properly replaced.

Clean the seal to prevent uneven seal or contact between the filter and the seal. Uneven contact can lead to leaks and clogs.

De-clog water sprays by forcing high-pressure water through them or running a soft and small microfiber cloth through them.

You can also repeat these steps for your washing machine, depending on the make and model you have at home.

A gentle shake helps.

Sometimes your appliance needs a gentle nudge to get back in the saddle. Do not be afraid to give it the gentle push it needs to kickstart its operation. Ensure that you have checked all of the obvious basics, including that the appliance is properly plugged into the main wall socket, the switch is on, and the cords are okay.

Once confirmed, give your appliance a gentle nudge or shake to get it started. Sometimes, the problem may be due to a c

Check the seal

Appliances like washing machines and dishwashers are designed to stop operation once the doors or seals come off. This safety feature was introduced to avoid accidents and also to prevent water-related damages.

You should check your appliance’s seal for problems after checking all of the obvious parts. Replace the seal by calling a professional if it is broken. You can also check for particles or solid materials blocking the seal area.

You can proceed to contact your appliance repair technician if these steps prove abortive and your appliance has failed to come back on.
