Predictions For The 2023 Kentucky Derby 2023

This year’s favorite derby contender is Forte, the top earner of the Road to the Kentucky Derby and trained by Todd Pletcher. It doesn’t come as a surprise as the thoroughbred has had pretty impressive performances since he started his racing career.

Forte is even the top pick of four out of five derby experts. Even bettors and fans are rooting for Forte to win the 149th Kentucky Derby title. If you look at all the derby prep races that Forte participated in, you will see that he has dominated each of them.

His performance at the Fountain of Yout Stakes has solidified his title as the 2023 Kentucky Derby favorite. The thoroughbred made a wise move when he showed his superiority and grabbed the title of this G2 race last March 4.

The derby’s point leaderboard says it all, as it shows how dominant is this Pletcher trainee thoroughbred.

Earlier this year, it circulated online that Bob Baffert trained horse Arabian Knight would be taken under Tim Yakteen’s wings and allowed to run the Churchill Downs. He was then the second favorite to win the derby this year.

However, a recent update regarding this issue has surfaced where the owner of Arabian Knight, Amr Zedan, announced that the thoroughbred wouldn’t be running in the derby anymore. Due to this recent update, the second favorite spot has been passed down to Practical Move.

Like Forte, Practical Move also won all the derby prep races he participated in. Not to mention that he also has a pretty impressive race record throughout his racing career. Thus, if Forte doesn’t make it to the finish line, maybe Practical Move will.

The Important of Odds in Horse Race Betting

The importance of the horse race betting odds should not be neglected. Odds give you an idea of how much you will win when you bet on a specific horse. Additionally, it also indicates the amount of money wager on a contender. The odds of a particular horse will decrease as more money is being wagered on that contender.

For instance, if the odds show 10-a or 15-1, it demonstrates the amount you can profit on betting on that horse and the amount wagered on that horse. Therefore, the first odd example means that for every $1 wagered, you will get a return of $10, giving you a $9 profit.

That’s why you should understand what betting odds are and stay updated with any changes in the odds of an upcoming horse racing event like the Kentucky Derby.

Although the derby is still months away, knowing who is the frontrunner and the holder of the best odds, you will know how to approach your betting strategy and create a viable plan to increase your chance of profiting.

Three Different Types of Odds

When studying the odds for the Kentucky Derby, you might run into three different forms of odds. Don’t panic! These odds can be easily understood if you are willing to learn. Below are the three different types of odds that you will encounter:

  • Fractional odds: This type of odds is also called the traditional or British odds. As the name implies, this odd is written in fraction form, like 8/1. It could also sometimes be expressed in a ratio like 8:1.
  • Decimal odds: The next type of odds you will come across is decimal. It stands for the amount you will win for every $1 bet. Let’s say the odds that your favorite horse will win is 2.00. Therefore, the expected return will be $200 for every $100 wager.
  • American Odds: American odds, also known as moneyline odds, is the most commonly used odds in most US sportsbook. These odds are accompanied by a plus (+) or a minus (-) sign before the numbers. The odds with a plus sign are given to the contenders with a low chance of winning or also referred to as the underdogs. Meanwhile, the odds with a minus sign are given to the contender who will likely win the race or the favorite.

Start Studying the Odds

You should start studying the odds of Kentucky Derby contenders as early as today. It will give you enough time to go through each hopeful and, ultimately, decide which contender will provide you with the best profit.

Use the data above to guide you in starting your handicapping or examination and be well prepared for the big event this coming May 6.
