5 Ways Older Adults Can Look and Feel Young

As we grow older, many of us realize that, indeed, age is just a number. The number of birthdays we’ve had has no hold over us. Investing in ourselves allows us to look and feel young, even as older adults.

Here are five ways older adults can feel youthful:

1. Choose A Positive Community

Surrounding ourselves with positive energy can have an immensely positive impact on our mental and physical well-being. One of the best ways to do this is to keep good company.

Many older adults near retirement age move to retirement centres with a warm and positive atmosphere. Pick a community of like-minded people who have had comparable lived experiences and are interested in similar activities.

In addition, you can join clubs that offer interesting activities and hobbies such as chess, backgammon, gardening, cycling, or art.

2. Enhance Your Skincare

We often neglect our skin when we think of healthcare. This is a mistake because our skin is an essential organ. It shields our body fluids, stops dehydration, and protects us from harmful elements. The nerve endings in our skin are also a critical warning system, letting us feel touch, pain, heat, and cold.

Healthy-looking skin also helps us feel younger and improves our self-confidence. Here are some essential skin care tips for seniors that can help older adults feel healthy, active, and youthful:

  1. Be gentle with your skin when washing. Instead of harsh soaps, use gentle products.
  2. Use tried and tested moisturizers every day to hydrate your skin.
  3. Protect your skin from harmful sun rays.
  4. Consume a balanced diet to nourish your skin.
  5. Drink water regularly to keep your skin healthy.
  6. Use simple skincare techniques and products.
  7. Avoid consuming tobacco and the type of foods that harm your skin.

3. Embrace a Healthy Lifestyle

A healthy lifestyle can significantly impact how young you look and feel. It starts with your diet. Consume healthy, fresh, and natural foods such as proteins, vegetables, fruit and water. Steer clear of foods that are poor for your health.

Please also consider incorporating more physical activities into your life. Light physical activities such as walking, croquet, or bowling can improve your strength, endurance, and energy. For more challenging activities, try swimming, jogging, or table tennis.

4. Improve Oral Hygiene

Studies show that people who smile more look younger and live longer too. Enhance your oral hygiene by following these tips and smile with more self-confidence:

  • Brush and floss regularly.
  • Use mouthwash periodically.
  • Avoid sugary and acidic drinks.
  • Drink water regularly.
  • Consume less red wine, dark colas, and tobacco.
  • See your dentist every six months.

5. Sleep Well

There’s a reason they call it beauty sleep! Nothing gets rid of the dark circles under your eyes faster or more naturally than rest. Regular sleep is also terrific for your health.

Go to bed on time and try to get at least seven hours of sleep a night. Turn off your television set or put away your device an hour before bedtime. Instead of looking at your phone, turn to a good book or magazine.

Please also try to minimize the stress in your life. Not only does anxiety negatively impact your sleep, but it also affects your health.

When we look and feel good, we’re more confident, active, and productive. Adopt the best lifestyle changes and invest in your future today.
