Examining the favourites for the US Open

Whether it be Jon Rahm’s incredible performance at the Masters in April or Brooks Koepka securing his first major in four years at the PGA Championship, golf in 2023 has been exciting, unpredictable, and everything in between.

It hasn’t stopped there, as avid and casual fans alike can look forward to another intriguing major this month, with the world’s best players from both the PGA Tour and the controversial LIV Golf League descending upon The Los Angeles Country Club for what should be another competitive four days of golf.

As is the case with every major, it’s near impossible to confidently say who will reign supreme in California later this month, with several players entering in exceptional form. However, there are a handful who are garnering plenty of interest in the us open betting odds – and with that in mind – read on as we dissect who are the favourites to take home a cool $3.8 million come June 18.

Jon Rahm

After his performances on the final day at Augusta, it’s easy to see why Spain’s Jon Rahm has gained favouritism in the betting lines. His poise and ability to make crucial putts down the stretch separated him from the chasing pack, and after finishing -12 after 72 holes, the 28-year-old secured his maiden Masters Trophy and his second career major.

While his performance in Georgia was truly special, his most recent outing at a major wasn’t anything to write home about. He would go on to finish seven over at the PGA Championship last month – which was tied for 50th place. With that being said, you can always expect a player of Rahm’s calibre to bounce back, and if he is able to get his powerful drive going consistently on what is a challenging course, expect the Spaniard to be there or thereabouts on Sunday.

For those who believe Rahm can notch up his third major triumph, at the time of writing, he is paying 8/1.

Scottie Scheffler

Given the form and subsequent hype surrounding the United States’ Scottie Scheffler in recent years, there were many fans and pundits who were of the belief that a major in 2023 was a certainty for the 26-year-old. However, with two of the four majors having already been and gone, Scheffler finds himself running out of opportunities to add that elusive second title to his trophy cabinet.

After a disappointing tenth-place finish at the Masters, Scheffler vastly improved on that performance to finish tied for second and just two shots shy of the eventual victor Koepka at the PGA Championship most recently. He will be out for redemption in LA this month, and it appears as though there are plenty of punters who feel he is primed to do so, with Scheffler tied for favourite with Rahm at 8/1.

Brooks Koepka

When looking at Koepka’s form over the past few years, there wouldn’t have been too many people who would have predicted the Floridian would have experienced such a successful campaign in 2023. Much was made of his lack of confidence and inability to get back to the golfing summit in the Netflix docuseries ‘Full Swing’ – however to his credit – the 33-year-old has turned over a new leaf since joining LIV and has once again established himself as a top three player in the game today.

That is evidenced by his showings in both majors this year after he finished second at the Masters and won the PGA Championship last month. His triumph in New York was particularly impressive given the manner in which he lost his lead at the Masters just a month prior. He capitulated down the stretch at Augusta – which would have broken many a golfer.

It didn’t break Koepka, however, and he came back with vengeance at the Oak Hill Country Club to dominate his opposition. He is garnering a short price to continue that form, with the five-time major winner garnering odds of 9/1 to capture his sixth.
